November 6, 1976: Ron Martin

Before he started showing slides of his work, Ron Martin showed a film someone had made of him making a black painting. It seemed important to him for us to know how many gallons of paint he used. It took about 15 minutes to pour and spread about 6 gallons of black Liquitex acrylic paint around with a squeejee. Richard Billingsworth commented, much to everyone’s glee and Ron Martin’s embarrassment, that he thought Ron making a painting was a lot like sex: it seemed like quite a bit of time went into the preparation, the event was relatively quick, and then there was a lot of clean up after.

November 4, 1975: Dennis Gill Sculptures

Dennis Gill is exhibiting several beautiful sculptures in the Anna Leonowens Gallery. There are two, three foot circular steel hoops at the front of the gallery: one filled with glass marbles the other filled with broken glass. My favorite is a wooden pallet elevated with small wooden wedges under each corner leveling the sculpture.

November 3, 1975: Martha Wilson and Truck, Fuck, Muck

Martha Wilson came back to Halifax surrounded with a bit of a mystique, to read her performance. She used to teach English here at NSCAD before moving to New York where she’s started Franklin Furnace, a performance art archive on Franklin Street in TriBeca. Truck, Fuck, Muck is three versions of her getting picked up by a trucker somewhere out west.

November 1, 1976: Elliot Schwartz

I like Elloit Schwartz very much- he is smart and funny. He showed us these photographs of vernacular objects that he had photographed. Very direct, shot straight on, like museum artifacts.
